16. The police begin to show up in greater numbers, carrying larger weapons, and wearing more armor. They go from standard beat cops to fully decked out in riot gear with shotguns and rifles, patrolling the streets in armored cars. They don’t arrest people more often or act any different than normal in regards to normal crime but you occasionally hear gunfire in the night or find signs of battle in normal urban areas: bloodstains on the steps of a library, an overturned and burnt out armored car on downtown streets, spent shells and bullet holes. If asked, the police will downplay it, saying nothing is wrong and that nothing has changed; things have always been like this and it is simply your imagination. The situation only gets worse over time.
