After all, the player characters need not act on every rumor they overhear in the tavern.

What to do if your players do ignore one of the rumors that you dangle in front of them? Recycle it, of course! Just because the PCs neglected to get involved doesn’t mean that the storyline didn’t play out behind the scenes . . . and what are the consequences that the PCs must face now, days or maybe weeks after the rumor was first presented to them? Only you, the gamemaster, can decide what happened when the PCs were elsewhere.
