Beast Caverns existed long before settlers made the region their home. Carved out of the rock by the flow of water they were once the source of a river that long ago changed its course as the water eroded new paths through the rocks. Over the millenniums the caves have been home to all sorts of animals, monsters and in more recent history bandits and raiders have called the place home. As civilisation has begun to catch up with the region, the caves have been cleared out by local authorities (sheriffs, bailiffs and marshals for example) or even hired swords on more than one occasion but it is never long before the caves become home to some new creature or band of ne'er-do-wells seeking a home. Often the caves are home to creatures that are no threat to the people of the local settlements but every so often the caves become the lair of some malign creature or the staging area of some band of raiders or other.

Currently, it is both.

The cave has become home to a large, monstrous beast which is preying on local wildlife and farm animals alike.

As if this was not enough, a band of none human raiders that people have referred to as the 'Bloody Tongue' due to their habit of taking the tongues from their victims have also taken to using the caves as a hideout. These raiders have been ambushing people on the trade routes and attacking ill defended caravans so that many a small caravan or independent travelling merchant have begun to rethink the wisdom of traversing the area.
