Description

This is the 86th in an ongoing series aimed to provide the overworked DM with ready-to run encounters.

The PCs encounter an Airioch, a member of the fey people created by the D’Aroine from their beloved Irioch cats. The encounter is CR 1, although it need not be a combat encounter.

Because the D’Aroine civilization slowly fell due to their inability to have children, the aging D’Aroine found themselves in ever increasing need of caregivers.

While some D’Aroine employed members of the younger peoples as caregivers, many harbored fears and prejudices that inclined them to distrust and suspicion. Some D’Aroine built constructs to serve in this role, but many found these constructs too unfeeling. And, of course, many D’Aroine feared that these constructs might turn against them or believed that they were lacking in feeling. The D’Aroine wanted caregivers they could trust and whose devotion was evident.

Because the D’Aroine had enjoyed a close bond with the Irioch Cats, a species of fey felines, it made sense that they would uplift some of the Irioch and transform them into humanoids.

D’Aroine moral philosophers convinced the wizards that the Irioch should have the right to make two critical decisions. The first was whether to be uplifted. The second was whether to take care of the D’Aroine.

Many Irioch agreed to the transformation and somewhat fewer agreed to care for the D’Aroine. And thus, the Airioch were created, uplifted from fey cats to care for the aging D’Aroine.

For the most part, the Airioch cared for the D’Aroine with loyalty and compassion until the last living D’Aroine in their care perished. As the D’Aroine died, their Airioch caregivers took up lives of their own, creating their own civilization and cultures.
