Earth remains a constantly changing background to the space race from era to era. The technologies that exoglobalization enables can have curative or catastrophic consequences back home, affecting the crew's families, cities and even whole continents. Likewise humanity's capacity for calamity and courage may be exported back out to the stars in strange and unusual ways.

The biggest impact that these social trends and cycles will have will be to the nature of the factions exploring and encountered in space. Spacecraft and colonies will be filled with wary colonists, near, exo- and post- humans, pre- and post- singularity species. The crew will encounter new beings from those coloured by familiar science fiction tropes to those created from a wholly new cloth of neogen DNA, smart matter or silicon. Some of these new beings will be back in mission control, making decisions that profoundly affect the relationship between the crew and those that work with and for them.

And everyone will have their terrific or terrible reasons for what they choose to do.
