Description

Angria is a two-player game covering asymmetrical coastal warfare and corsairs in 18th century India, one of the few times in the colonial era that a South Asian power was able to successfully contest the seas with European navies. One player takes on the role of the Maratha navy and its ambitious commander, Kanhoji Angre aka Angria, while the other takes the part of his adversaries: the Mughal Empire, the British East India Company, and the Portuguese. The setting is India's Konkan mountainous coast, dominated by magnificent island and promontory forts. Players use cards to build up their capabilities on a strategic map and intercepting each other's trade before unleashing assaults on their enemies' forts. The Maratha shallow-draft ships are deadly in shallow coastal waters, but may struggle against the larger European vessels further offshore, especially in rough weather. Diplomacy also plays a key role, as the Marathas' foes are less committed to the fight and may be bought off or appeased.
