In the 2024 edition of Dungeons & Dragons, background traits were removed and replaced with origin feats. While origin feats offer meaningful mechanical options and contribute well to character builds, they tend to fall short in the areas of character flavour and roleplaying potential—something the 2014 edition excelled at.
This supplement aims to bridge that gap by reintroducing lightweight, flavourful mechanics known as Background Quirks. Inspired by the situational traits of the 2014 backgrounds, these quirks are designed to enhance exploration and roleplay without upsetting the balance of the game. They’re intended to be used in addition to the origin features granted by each background.
Each background listed in the 2024 Player’s Handbook is represented here, and every one comes with two or three unique quirks. These might include benefits like receiving discounted healing from temples, gaining the ability to roll initiative at advantage after performing for a crowd, or having a guaranteed buyer for crafted goods.
As mentioned, these quirks are situational, not mechanical powerhouses. They’re designed to deepen immersion and storytelling rather than provide raw combat power. That said, as the DM, you can decide whether players benefit from all their background’s quirks or just one or two—it’s completely up to your table.
