The game characters and artwork are based on the Battle of the Planets (Gatchaman) cartoon series from the same time period.
In the television market where I lived as a child (Western Massachusetts, Northern Connecticut, USA), this show was known as G-Force (a re-worked series, which put back the missing content from Gatchaman, but included a dreadful back-beat in every scene).
