User Summary
A large scale first person shooter set in the Western Front of World War I, Beyond the Wire pits players against each other in 50 vs 50 combat. Maps in the game span large, open ares as well as close quarters combat in trenches. The game puts an emphasis on period appropriate weapons, centered on a methodical and tactical approach with bolt-action rifle combat. It also boasts a unique melee combat system that includes directional impact and several weapon choices, allowing players to experience the brutal hand to hand combat from the Great War.
Beyond the Wire also actively encourages teamwork and strategy in order to succeed. The built-in voice chat system allows players to communicate with their fellow soldiers and develop plans as a group and as small squads. Maps are designed with strategic challenges in mind where players must find a way to cross wide open areas under enemy fire, sweep close-quarters trenches and small towns, or take the fight to the enemy in dense forest.
The game captures the brutality of war as well, creating a dark, muddy, and dreary atmosphere while also accurately portraying the horrors of World War I, complete with a realistic portrayal of injuries with gore, blood, and brutal violence. Players can also have their vision limited by attacks with chlorine gas or white phosphorus, adding yet another element they must work together to overcome.
The game is focused on historical accuracy with its setting and weapons systems, only making changes when it creates a more engaging experience for players.
