Translated description from the Open Beta 11 Release Candidate 2:
What Blue Sky is all about
If you had to put a genre designation for Blue Sky, then »First World War fantasy« would probably be the most
suitable. Let's imagine the Red Baron and Biggles
and the romance of the fighters far above the trenches in Belgium and France. Let's imagine a fantasy setting with elves and flying islands and other fantastic things, but on a technological level with battleships, cannons, flying machines and machine guns instead of swords, wizards and chain mail.
The problem with war RPGs is that war is a difficult environment to make something fun out of in RPGs, as war environments are by nature highly hierarchical and RPGs are of
nature fairly flat process. It is much easier in miniature games than in role-playing games, where the player assumes the entire hierarchy.
To make the WW1 setting work like that, we chose to look at the fraternization over the trenches during Christmas 1914, when Germans and English met in no man's land, and made brotherhood a theme for the game. The excuse we made up is that the war has gone on for so long that the resources of the parties invovled have almost run out, so the war has stopped.
We created a corps of volunteer airmen and let the corps take on the task of creating brotherhood. We let that corps have a fairly flat hierarchy, to get rid of the problem of hierarchical organization, and furthermore include international recognition so they can operate reasonably unhindered.
Finally, we created a Europia that had space for this war as well as all fantasy in the form of elves, flying battleships and other strange things. We made the war having reached some kind of stalemate when neither party no longer have the resources to continue the fighting, so there is an opportunity to act freely across the front and no need to march and wait for orders.
