Description
The Ju87 was the Luftwaffe's dedicated dive bomber, indeed the name "Stuka" is derived from the German word Sturzkampfflugzeug - "dive bomber". Early in the war it was a deadly adjunct to the Panzer Divisions as flying artillery with pinpoint accuracy. The Battle of Britain exposed the overall weakness of the Stuka to opposing fighters, but the upgraded Ju87D model continued to perform its essential work on the Mediterranean and Eastern fronts.
