From the introduction:
For the past few months a small town has been suffering the mysterious losses of its citizens, and despite extensive enquiries by the watch no cause has been discovered. To make matters worse on the last expedition to try and discover the cause of the disappearances an entire party of watchmen went missing.
The town elders have now decided that they are dealing with something beyond their ability and have decided to call in mercenary assistance.
The actual cause of the losses is a small group of vampires who have taken up residence within the towns sewer systems. The vampires lead by Soralindil, a vampire sorcerer and Gadbor a vampire rogue, started by securing their lair and establishing some shock troops in the form of vampire spawn. However, now they feel a little more secure they are more cautious and ensure their victims are destroyed rather than allowing them to rise as further vampires.
Finally, to secure their lair during the hours of daylight they have recruited a couple of thugs to act as guardians using a combination of their domination powers and the lure of wealth and power.
