Byzantium is the name given to both the state and the culture of the Hellenic Empire in the middle ages. Both the state and the inhabitants always called themselves Hellenes/Roman, as did most of their neighbors. Western Europeans, who had their own Roman Empire. The eastern Europeans called them Orientals or Greeks (Hellenes). Byzantion was the ancient name of the capital city and Byzantines gives the name of the Empire's capital city, as Constantinople (City of Constantinos the Emperor).
