From publisher blurb:
Terra is known for its fabulous biodiversity. Flora and fauna of every stripe occupies a niche on the planet somewhere, including hostile environments. But Terra’s current animal lifeforms are simply the latest in a long chain of evolution stretching back hundreds of millions of years. Most famous of these ancient lifeforms are the dinosaurs, which ruled until they were wiped out by an asteroid strike around 65 million BCE. Their demise allowed a new clade — mammals — to rise and eventually claim the mantle of rulers of Earth.
Over the subsequent 65 million years, life once again flourished. No longer would animals achieve the massive sizes of some of the dinosaurs, but many would still be among the largest ever to roam the world.

Each entry also includes the era in which the animal lived, brief facts, and an illustration.
