The object of the game is to become the World Champion Cowboy/Cowgirl (ie, the richest player). This is achieved by traveling along the board and entering rodeos as they are reached. Various mishaps can occur, such as hospital stays, and there are the expected expenses along the way. Once you've garnered two trophies, you can enter the National Finals, at the end of the game track. Once there, you enter events repeatedly, until the entire Finals purse is gone. You must therefore decide whether to stop at every rodeo on the way to the Finals (which will garner money and trophies but leaves the Finals purse vulnerable to faster players) or charge there as quickly as possible (assuming the prerequisites have been achieved).
