Sure, you’re a nice DM. You want to give your players what they want. But when what they want is to play “Something from the Monster Manual”, then that’s just not practical. Or is it?
In their original conception changelings were to a doppleganger what tieflings are to a fiend. In the latest official reimagining of the changeling, the use of the name has led to their reclassification as fey beings. But if they are going to not just be humanoids and remain true to their doppleganger roots, then in our view they should more properly be monstrosities.
In the past dopplegangers have sometimes been presented as purely psionic, mentally projecting an appearance instead of physically changing. Yet changeling character’s masks and personas have usually been presented as having physical form. This leaves us needing a mechanism for their shapechanging. We’ve taken some inspiration from the mimic - with our reimagined doppleganger and their changeling descendants, becoming a monstrous composite of endoskeletal humanoid and ooze.
This new variant of changeling takes inspiration from both the legacy version and the updated official fey version and provides us with the opportunity to consider the abilities, ecology and behavior of these monstrous humanoids anew.
