This red and white book was the first published Chivalry & Sorcery product, although a version called Chevalier, a Dungeons & Dragons product, had previously been self-published.

The 130-page book which has a 1977 copyright with the back cover illustration dated 1978 includes encyclopedic information about the feudal settings, races, statistic attributes, social class and social status, equipment, designing feudal campaign settings, justice, warhorses, knights, courtly love, tournaments, jousting, heraldry, construction costs, types of troops, movement rates, field commanders, combat, various types of character classes, spells, experience levels, and monsters.

The primary authors were Ed Simbalist and Wilf Backhaus.

The book is dedicated to the Society for Creative Anachronism, the SCA.
