The city of Valond stands near the fringes of civilisation, the last truly urban outpost of human civilisation along the mighty Holy Mother River. It is a small city, nowhere near as grand as many others, yet a welcome refuge from the harsher lands beyond.
By day, the city bustles with hawkers selling their wares, the markets often overflowing into the surrounding streets. The city is prosperous and as secure as anywhere so far from the rest of civilisation can be, yet, as in any such place, it has its fair share of the poor and unfortunate, among them beggars, criminals… and, more recently, refugees from the east.
It is not a perfect city, with prejudice, misfortune, and a sometimes overly moralistic religion. But for nearly five thousand people, it is home, and that is often enough.
This is a detailed, rules-neutral look at a small(ish) fantasy city. It is written for a generic fantasy setting and can either be moved wholesale to a suitable location in a pre-existing campaign setting or serve as a source of characters and locations that can be moved individually to established cities.
