Notes and rules covering the circumstances in which a PC might rise from the grave
Sure, you’re a nice DM. You want to give your players what they want. But when what they want is to play “Something from the Monster Manual”, then that’s just not practical. Or is it?
A corporeal undead character is the trapped soul of a formerly living creature, bound to inhabit either its own corpse of the corpse of another. For the purposes of this ruleset all of the corporeal undead creatures, skeletons, zombies, mummies, wights or revenants are considered to be subdivisions of the Reborn lineage from Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft, given access to an expanded feat tree.
We represent the different powers manifest in corporeal undead stat blocks here as a series of default features and additional optional feats. This lets players select the aspects of the monsters they find most appealing as the character levels up. By making PCs pay for the cool bits using their ASI increases and carefully arranging the feat tree structures, the power level of the new monstrous PC is kept firmly in line with the rest of the party.
