When the Gyalsk beast warrior Maighread brai Criosaidh discovers that her glorious skin image suspiciously resembles that of an Aran storyteller who has traveled to the highlands of the north in search of material for his stories, and that both skin images contain unknown runes, this circumstance causes her great concern. Together with the storyteller Amud, she goes in search of a powerful Brancha-Dûn, a shaman of her people, to get to the bottom of the matter.
Meanwhile, in the Hjalding city of Thorwal, a similar thing happens to Hjaldar Thorwulfsson, the darling of the Runjas. A Godi, a Thorwalian seer, brings him into contact with the mage Swanhild Norrisdottir from the Hall of Winds in Olport and prophesies a momentous destiny for both of them, which is reflected in the coincidence of their skin images. The search for their destiny leads the four adventurers to venerable Olport. But before glory, the Runjas, revered by the Thorwalians as daughters of Ifirn and goddesses of fate, have put adventure: The Peaceless and pirate Blackaxe has it in for the bearers of the skin images and is doing everything in his power to get hold of them while they fathom the task the gods have in store for them.

Doch vor den Ruhm haben die Runjas, die von den Thorwalern als Töchter Ifirns und Göttinnen des Schicksals verehrt werden, das Abenteuer gesetzt: Der Friedlose und Pirat Schwarzaxt hat es auf die Träger der Hautbilder abgesehen und setzt alles daran, ihrer habhaft zu werden, während sie die Aufgabe ergründen, die die Götter für sie vorgesehen haben.
