Dragons Cast a Long Shadow is an unofficial extension/add-on to Jeremy Keller’s tabletop roleplaying game Technoir, intended to adapt the game to settings that mix cyberpunk and/or transhuman elements with magic. It is supplement, not a complete game, requiring a full version of Technoir to play.
Best viewed as a replacement/enhancement of the Technoir Player’s Guide, Dragons Cast a Long Shadow (or, if you like, DCaLS) offers a different approach to magic than Hexnoir, Morenoir, and other fan attempts at adding magic into the game, not just adding a single “Evoke” verb to cover it all.
Built with an eye towards allowing somewhat more complex Technoir play in some of the most popular urban fantasy settings in roleplaying, DCaLS adds the notion of “venues”—such as astral space, meatspace, the zeitgeist, or virtual reality—and “forms”, each with their own verbs to use in such venues. Protagonists differentiate themselves by what forms they have, and what those forms are good at within particular venues.
