El invierno toca a su fin y la nieve empieza a fundirse en la aldea que habitan los personajes. Es hora de que los hombres libres acudan al thing o asamblea anual del país, en el que se discuten asuntos de interés público, se arreglan entuertos, se renuevan amistades, se conciertan matrimonios y, eventualmente, se organizan los strandhögg de verano.
Este año, el bóndi del clan de los personajes se ve imposibilitado para acudir al thing de primavera, cosa que le tiene de muy mal humor, y debe enviar a aquellos en su nombre. Como el bóndi ha esperado hasta el último momento antes de reconocer que no podía efectuar el desplazamiento, los personajes salen de la aldea con algo de retraso... y serias dudas de si llegarán a tiempo al thing o no. Por delante les espera un viaje de cuatro días en barco, para el que cuentan con el pequeño navío familiar, bautizado en su día como "Golpe de Týr" (una especie de byrding más o menos bien mantenido, liviano y maniobrero).
Lo que los personajes no pueden saber es que el crimen y una presunta infamia les aguardan a su llegada...
