This is a guide and set of easy mechanics to help you run a full scale battle that brings in combat narrative larger than the party and their encounter. City-wide battles can be played out with more immersion. Armies can collide.
This is a tool to make the climax of your story come to a finale of epic proportions! The scale of your narrative can be made even greater as Epic Battles are Made Easy!
The premise of these mechanics is to have your party fighting in an encounter while the larger battle plays out around them. Unlike existing methods, the larger battle is not a forgone conclusion narrated by the DM. It is subjected to dice rolls and there is an air of chance, in keeping with the spirit of D&D.
It adds more drama and suspense to your big set pieces and it brings in more immersion and involvement from the players too. The dice rolls decide who is beating who in that moment, which allows you to better narrate as the battle rages on. At certain points there will be opportunities for your players to make tactical shifts to tip the balance of the battle their favour. Your players can also plan out the formation and strategy of an entire army for a true total war experience!
