From the introduction:

As players, you take on the role of a roving band of magicians; but these are magicians unlike any you have seen before. Perhaps you will be heroic folk singers, traveling from town to town righting wrongs with your musical talents. Or maybe you’ll be a band of heavy metal magicians, tearing apart your foes with the very elements, stirred to rage by your songs. You might assemble your group around such a common theme, or form a ragtag alliance of different genres and sounds. Perhaps you’ll imitate your favorite band. Perhaps you’ll form a new one.
