IN the year 1911, International Geographer Quarterly sponsored an expedition to explore the ruins of southern Egypt in search of the lost tomb of Nesbanebdjed the 1st. The expedition was large and well-funded, with members from around the globe, representing 6 different great Nations. Under the leadership of Lord Bartholemew Mahoney, the venture was seemingly charmed from the start. The expedition members all met in Cairo in a timely manner, and made their way up the Nile river via steamboat without incident, to reach the ancient city of Thebes. Once they had disembarked and traded travel by boat for travel by camel, they followed the ancient map that Lord Mahoney had pieced together, and found the buried tomb for which they had sought in record time. The sent a telegram back to IGQ headquarters on July 11th 1911.
IT was the first and last communication International Geographer Quarterly would receive from them once they reached the site of Nesbanebdjed’s royal grave.
THE Expedition spent two weeks uncovering the entrance to the buried structure, and another week struggling to get the massive stone doors to open. Once inside, however, their persistence would seemingly pay off, for they discovered a veritable treasure trove of artifacts and art within the tomb’s chambers. While you and the others examined and documented the many relics to be found, Lord Mahoney was solely focused on finding the burial chamber of Queen Nesbanebdjed. It was a little past midnight, on their third day exploring the tomb, that Lord Mahoney found the secret door, and pushed it open.
YOU, and your fellow Players, are the members of the Expedition who just happened to be at hand when Lord Mahoney asked for assistance entering the burial chamber. The room was large with walls and ceiling covered in brightly painted hieroglyphs. The only treasure within it was a large golden sarcophagus placed in the center of the chamber. The lid was decorated in precious gems, and sculpted as a deathmask of Queen Nesbanebdjed’s noble features. With the help of some crowbars, you were able to help Lord Mahoney remove the lid.
INSIDE lay a woman wrapped in ancient linen, holding a large gemstone that glowed with an amber hue. Lord Mahoney picked up the crystal and held it aloft. To the horror of all who witnessed it, the mummified woman in the sarcophagus reached up to grab Mahoney’s arm.
THE crystal fell from Lord Mahoney’s hand, and broke apart on the edge of the sarcophagus with a brilliant flash of yellow. The room shook violently, and all the lamps and torches went out as the ceiling started to collapse. You felt yourself falling into darkness.
