Description

From the preamble:

Facing the Titan is a role-playing game without a GM, without preparation, for a session of 2 to 3 hours of one-shot play. The necessary materials consist of two separate dice, preferably black and white, a pencil, a copy of the Motifs sheet and these rules. For a better game experience, one copy per player of the game aid, Titan sheets and a few pieces of paper can be provided.

In the same way as games such as Fiasco or Protocol, Facing the Titan, for example, does not provide an action resolution system. The characters of the players have no numerical skills, and the objective of the game is to tell the story of these characters, to give them consistency, rather than to propose a game challenge to be solved.

Each player will play as a character of the Company, a group of heroes whose mission is to defeat the Titan who reigns over their world. In five distinct Game Phases, we will discover these characters and the world around them:

In the Companions Phase, we will discover who the Companions are
In the Titan Phase, we will discover the Titan and its powers
In the World Phase, we will discover the world and its wonders
In the Preparation Phase, we will discover what the Companions have prepared to face the Titan
In the Clash Phase, we will discover the final outcome of our history

Each Phase has distinct rules, but they are based on a common foundation. A player is referred to as the Active Player because he owns the dice. He launches them to define a Tone. This Tone will be used to give a specific color and atmosphere to what he narrates. Following the rules of the current Phase, he begins to tell some part of the story, most often through his character. The other players must join him by asking him for clarification, by bouncing back on what is being told, by interpreting the reactions of their character. Then the Active Player takes the dice and gives them to another player, who becomes active in turn. And so on until the end of the Phase, then of the game.

Facing the Titan propose six different Titans. A mini-setting is associated with each one of them. Thoses settings offer different approaches of Medieval Fantasy, but the game works well with post-apocalyptic, futuristic and even modern settings.
