While the wealthiest of all the dwarves are those who mine precious metals and gemstones, not all of them like living underground. Some prefer to take the heavily-forested hills and mountains as their homes. And while wood is nowhere near as precious as diamonds and gold, one can still live as a dwarf without the insatiable lust for riches. Indeed, many forest dwarves reject the extractive nature of mining — the iron blade is the only metal they worship, and chunks of solid amber catch the light as well as any glittering gemstone. Or so many of they will tell you.
But even as they boast about their sylvan idylls, they are just as mortal as any of us. They still want things that cannot be had in their woods. Yes, there are clans of forest dwarves who shun the outsiders, but there are many more who actively seek commerce with their neighbours and access to the trade routes of the wider world.
