Description

The origins of the word がんどうち, pronounced Gandouchi, are not entirely certain but one popular theory is that the word is composed from another word meaning "to steal". Gandouchi is a traditional event that takes place during the Doll Festival particularly in the prefecture of Gifu. Children visit nearby houses and ask to view that home's doll display. After viewing the dolls, they receive snacks and sweets from the residents of the home — comparable to the tradition of Trick-or-treating on Halloween in some Western countries.

In Gandouchi, you want to arrange hina doll cards in your hand the best way possible. All the cards start spread out face down on the table. On a turn, you reveal two cards, then add one of them to your hand or exchange a card in hand for one of these cards. Any exchanged card and the card not taken are turned face down again, so pay attention to these cards and watch what others pick up!

At game's end, players reveal their hands, scoring the most points for having a wide range of colors and types of cards.
