Description

Grande Acedrex is a chess-like game, played like chess, shogi or similar games.

Played on a 12x12 board, this game first described in 1283 contains both some standard chess pieces (rook, pawn, bishop and king) and some not present today (Rhino, griffon, lion, giraffe).

Rules first published in Libro de los Juegos, commisioned by the king of Castille, Alfonso X.

Pawns start on the fourth row. Rhinos moves like a combined Knight and Bishop, Griffon like a ferz and a rook combined, giraffe is an elongated knight - and the lion jumps far and agressive.
