Description

Holy Diver is a 1989 Japanese video game for the Nintendo Famicom home console developed by Japanese videogame company Irem. The game is based on the 1983 album Holy Diver by Dio; however, it's unofficial and has no connection with the band. The game has four main characters, named after musicians Ronnie James Dio, Ozzy Ozborne, Zakk Wylde, and Randy Rhoads. Other characters and locations in the game are references to rock music such as the Crimson Kingdom and Black Slayer.

The game was self-published by Irem and released on April 28, 1989 for the Famicom. The game was scheduled for a North American release in the same year, and even received a brief preview in Electronic Gaming Monthly. However, for unknown reasons, the game was never released outside Japan. Since its release, the game has gone on to become a rare gem that is sought after by collectors. In 2018, the title was noted to cost around $75 USD for just the cartridge and up to $200 USD for the complete game with box and manual.

In response to this, distributor Retro-bit announced that they would give Holy Diver, complete with a full English translation, a worldwide physical re-release on the Nintendo Entertainment System. This new edition was limited to 2,900 copies for North America and 2,800 copies for Europe, and cost $60 USD for the Collector's Edition set, which included a hard embossed outer box, collectable retail box, pins, stickers, art prints and a hard-covered notebook. The first 1,000 copies in each region also came with a white game cartridge instead of the standard grey.
