From the introduction:
A pair of scheming dark elves — the enchantress Dazmene and the rogue Gaxdal — trick a griffenne into attacking human settlements in the Commonlands. They do this by stealing the griffenne’s eggs and leaving trails that the griffenne can easily follow. Disguised as a wood elf traveler, Dazmene plants the eggs in the settlements, then escapes by gating away.
