Players build their characters with many facets in mind.
First, they must choose both a class and a martial art (though not all are actually martial) There are 5 classes and 13 martial arts (expanded to 16 through the online expansions and supplements).
Then, players must choose Advantages and Disadvantages, which help to round out the background and personality of their characters.
Then players spend their character points to make their characters stronger, faster, tougher, smarter, etc. and to give them real-world skills to help them survive, like cooking, horsemanship, archery, hunting, etc.
Once completed, characters venture out into the world, guided by a GM, and discover conniving politicos, crafty tacticians, hulking warriors, tricky fighters, and the general populace hoping that unrest all comes to an end soon...
The abilities of players scale to epic proportions: the minimum in an ability is 5, players begin receiving bonuses at 15, but each ability scales all the way up to 100! Epic proportions.
Lastly, the mechanics are super simple, but allow for a wide variance of success and failure. Any time players rolls dice (even when creating their characters), any die that maxes out gets counted, and then rolled again! Since almost every action in the game begins with the rolling of two 20-sided dice, there is always the possibility of massive successes.
