From publisher blurb:
Doctor Elias Poole was a freelance researcher. He’d had a few setbacks, mostly due to the lingering economic effects of the Collapse and the ongoing social strife in the city, but lately things had been looking up. He’d made a series of minor advances that gave others a framework to build upon; and he’d met Jane, a beautiful young woman.
But lately, he had started to reflect on the ramifications of his work. Doc had begun to focus less on whether science could, and more on whether science should. He tried discussing the subject with Jane, who would just give him a blank stare, tell him not to worry about it, and start doing those things she knew always…distracted him.
But Doc had noticed odd behavior in Jane. Her irritability whenever he started having pangs of regret. The nights she went to the store "just for a minute" and stayed gone for several hours. The extra mileage logged on his car. Still, she swore she wasn’t cheating, and kept pleasuring him i the same as she always did.
This morning: Jane finally blew up at Doc, saying he should just keep at his work and not worry about what comes after. That's when he finally put his foot down; he would stop work on his research altogether.
She really didn't like hearing that...
