The year is 1987 - through ten years, Europe stood on the brink of war.
The balance of forces between East and West is measured out in the satellite countries, where advisors and agents use locals like pieces of a giant war game. At the same time the arena of another game is in the European capitals, where men and women in long coats and soft hats play fast and loose with each other in a waltz of blackmail, espionage, and murder.
No place is more inflamed than Berlin, where the two fronts, separated by a thin wall, combat from the shadows. At the Brandenburg Gate papers switch hands, while soldiers patrol.
There is nothing heroic about this power game and no room for righteous indignation. Yet a group of British heroes is suddenly thrown into this cauldron, in a divided city, in the middle of enemy territory. And Europe's fate is in their hands.
