Lords of Ragnarok

Game ID: GID0194644
Collection Status
Description

In this 1-4 player strategic board game, you will lead a unique, asymmetric hero and their army, trying to be the ultimate victor in a war that unfolds over approximately 120 minutes. Players will choose from various actions, such as building monuments, hunting monsters, ravaging the lands, and gathering armies and artifacts.
Gods will grant you blessings that will heavily impact the game and create a unique combo for each player. On top of all that, special runes will play a significant role in leveling up your armies or earning other bonuses that include control of deadly monsters.

While the game is a spiritual successor of Lords of Hellas and implements a lot of core gameplay aspects, there will be a lot of new mechanics and twists, so prepare yourself for a fresh, new thematic experience!

Multiple victory conditions will keep players at the edge of their seats until the end of the game, making room for some stunning, carefully planned last-minute reversals!

Pros
  • Some clever ideas surface in isolated rules (e.g., Loki blocking certain territories and the hero/idrisil mechanics).
  • Thematic ambition and monster/boss integration add flavor in isolation.
  • Ragnarok cards provide alternative endgame hooks that could add variety in better designs.
Cons
  • Rules feel incoherent and lack a strong, unified thread that makes the core loop enjoyable.
  • Core gameplay often drags without clear, meaningful choice or payoff.
  • An overabundance of components with unclear purposes leads to clutter and confusion.
  • Win conditions are frequently meaningless in practice, ending games unpredictably and undermining player agency.
  • High price and expansion-driven design raise concerns about sustainability and value.
Thematic elements
  • Mythology, conquest, and political maneuvering with threats like Loki and Ragnarok looming on the horizon.
  • A mythic Norse-inspired world blending folklore with future-tech elements; leagues of heroes, monsters, and gods on a modular map.
  • Hybrid of mythic epic storytelling and Euro-style objective-driven play, with a boss encounter (Loki) and Ragnarok-driven endgame triggers.

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Area control / territory conquest — Players contest signposted territories across a modular map to reach winning conditions.
  • Boss encounter – Loki — Defeating Loki requires meeting prerequisite conditions and is pivotal to the game’s endgame dynamics.
  • Hero management and action discs — A hero disc system allows each turn to trigger a one-time special action and interact with a map-wide flow.
  • Monster combat and wound-slot cards — Defeating monsters engages a mini-game of combat cards that cover wound slots and yield rewards.
  • Ragnarok cards — A set of cards that introduce extra win conditions and alter endgame timing, influencing strategy even if not all players pursue them.
  • Resource generation and temple building — Heroes collect resources, build temples, and form alliances with neutral factions; Idrisil interactions drive actions.

  • Multiple competing victory conditions add strategic depth and dynamic endgames
  • Solid solo mode via automaton (Atoma) that scales with the main game
  • Clear emphasis on strategic planning through temples, runes, and alliances
  • High replayability due to large board, varied regions, and monster activity

  • Cluttered components and dense terminology may slow early play
Thematic elements
  • Norse mythology, epic conquest, monster hunting, and alliance dynamics across Realms
  • Norse myth-inspired world with Viking factions, realms, and a looming Ragnarok, featuring monsters, temples, and a mythic board of regions and seas
  • mythic, episodic campaign feel with heroes (Beowulf, Ragnar) and a boss (Loki) driving endgame tension
Comparison games
none
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Area Control — Regions and lands are controlled by armies; population values determine control; domination leads to victory conditions or strategic advantages
  • Automata solo mode (Atoma) and followers — An automaton acts as a second player with its own card-driven turns; symbols and forges influence its actions and monster interactions
  • Desolation tokens and Ragnarok — Desolation tokens are lost-condition tokens; flipping Ragnarok-condition cards pushes the game toward endgame when certain criteria are met
  • Hero and follower customization — Each hero (Beowulf, Ragnar) has unique priorities and powers; followers (and Atoma) have special rules for control and combat
  • Monster hunts and combat cards — Hunting monsters uses combat cards and a weakness/weak-point system; monsters counterattack and affect territories and resources
  • Movement and dracar navigation — Heroes and boats move across regions; dracar enables movement across sea regions and enables area reach
  • Realms alliances — Players can ally with Realms via specific actions and runes to gain bonuses when activating actions in allied regions
  • Rune and forge economy — Runecards and region forges provide actions and combat enhancements; runes are spent to perform various game effects and recruit/defend
  • Temple/monument economy — Building temples and monuments grants bonuses, priests, and eventual victory conditions; temples strengthen regional control and grant combat benefits
