Magebane is subtitles "The Unofficial Magic: The Gathering RPG" (second edition) and positions itself as the nominal successor to Chris Bishop's Magic: The Gathering RPG.
Magebane uses the Mind's Eye RPG Light system combined with cards taken from Magic: The Gathering collectible card game. Cards are used to represent spells or other effects within the Magebane RPG. The referee must adjudicate effects that may otherwise be obscure.
Players are not required to physically own the cards they wish to use, but doing so is encouraged. Players without a card (or cards) may instead derive spells from published card lists. One aspect of the game that is particularly interesting is the prospect of rules "expansion" as Wizards of the Coast released new Magic: The Gathering expansions.
