From publisher blurb:
MODAN AT A GLANCE
Modan is inspired by several key pieces of media: Zootopia, Big Hero 6, cryptozoology, Onward, Hellboy, and Elemental. This is meant to give the world a larger-than-life feel, in which the fantastical is every day, and in which the truly strange walks alongside the mundane. There are three key concepts to keep in mind while running a campaign in Modan.
1. Peace and unity is new. Old wars die hard, and so do old animosities. This newfound civility is very young, with Modan being the model for what it could become. And with the worry of the Creeping Doom and the Ashen Silver always on the horizon, this could spill over to break the tenuous balance.
2. Modan is an island in all senses of the word. Originally joined to the mainland, Modan broke off during terrible earthquakes at the end of the last war, forcing the denizens to figure out a way to survive in isolation. While today that construction of the subterranean motors and rudders to help bring the island into land every few years for supplies assist, Modan has developed its own unique cultures and mannerisms that are far different from the still-recovering outside world.
3. Magic is everywhere. Discovering how to utilize magic in technology was the biggest breakthrough in Modanic history. After the war, magic was considered lost until scientists and magus put their collective brains together and came up with a solution. It's in phones, cars, toasters, everything! But that isn't to say that it still isn't dangerous. Wilder magics belong in the wilderness, and now out catching people off guard or awakening old creatures best left slumbering.
Enter a World where Magic and Science Work Together, and Where Progress is Possible
The tumultuous past of Modan continues to this day. Across the island a mysterious disease, colloquially known as the Creeping Doom, infects the population, seemingly harmless to the mundane, but a dangerous infection to those with magic. The virus strips a creature of all its magic, leaving them as mundane as humans. For most while devastating they still have their lives, but for others, the beings whose very essence is made of magic this is a death sentence. Almost a hundred people have lost their magic and there is no sign this is slowing down or a treatment is in sight. All available scientists are rushing to find a cure and discover who or what created this disease and to what purpose. The geopolitics of the island causes even more tensions to rise. As an island nation, every few months Modan stops to restock on any supplies a nearby nation has and allow others to travel off the island with ease. While the island has had a nomadic lifestyle for countless decades, many are tired of such a life but do not wish to leave their homes. Others live for the constant changes. Those longing for stability push for the island to find a permanent location near a favorable nation while the others that enjoy the nomadic lifestyle insist the island be expanded so they need not rely on the other nations as much, if at all. So far the debate around this has been civil but violence bubbles just beneath the surface of both stances.
