A performance is a group of artists collaborating on bringing this art to the masses. The interpretation of any work of art is up to the artists. Instructions to the artists are sparse. The same is often true of screenplays and scripts. The director of a play often adapts a play, attempting to put their own stamp on it in some way. The same holds true for the set-designers, costumers, etc.
