The Nepultions are a displaced species of Elementals, originally hailing from the Elemental Plane of Earth. However, encountering one in their native plane is rare, as most Nepultions have long been severed from their homeland. Over a millennia ago, a now-forgotten empire recruited the Nepultions—who then numbered in the thousands—to aid in mining operations on a distant, resource-rich world far from Realmspace. The Nepultions, treated well and willing participants, served diligently. Yet, once their task was complete, the empire abandoned them with no means of returning to their elemental plane.
Life on this foreign world proved harsh. Many Nepultions perished within the first year, and those who survived faced immense struggles as they adapted to their new environment. Like all beings from the Elemental Plane of Earth, Nepultions were accustomed to an atmosphere rich in carbon dioxide. The oxygen-dense air of the Material Plane was suffocating. To cope, the first Nepultions crafted metallic masks with built-in filters to reduce their oxygen intake. Worn constantly, these masks eventually fused to their wearers' faces, becoming an intrinsic part of their identity. Even modern-day Nepultions are born into this legacy, donning similar masks from a young age as their bodies gradually lose the ability to tolerate the Material Plane’s air.
