New Ry'laeh City at a Glance
New Ry’laeh City is inspired by several key pieces of media: Hellboy, Sandman, cryptozoology, eldritch horror, industrialist history, noir films, and chthonic spiritualities. New Ry’laeh originated from two very wild concepts: the first being “Cryptid Gods versus Cthulhu” and the second being “Eldritch 1940s”. This book is the final collection of those two ideas given a singular form. There are three core ideas to keep in mind when building and running a campaign set in New Ry’laeh.
The average resident doesn’t know about the eldritch monstrosities powering their homes. Very very very few people are actually aware of where PolypPower comes from, and any who have suspicions are often willing to look the other way for the convenience and wealth and prosperity that the alternative energy has brought. Those who do figure it out either disappear from all records, never to be seen again, or leave in the middle of the night and move into the countryside of West Ry’laeh.
The island chain is split spiritually, economically, and ideologically. East and West Ry’laeh are night and day, with the East heavily enveloped by PolypPower and the Four Elders, while the West sticks to the old ways and follow the tenets of the cryptid gods. Rural tradition versus urban expansion, generational tradition versus young excess.
The clock is ticking, just as great eyes begin to flutter from ancient rest. PolypPower is - unknown to most - running on borrowed time. It is only a matter of years before the eldritch gods being used as batteries and fuel and electricity awaken and unleash their wrath. As the need for more and more grows, so too does that window of safety begin to grow smaller and smaller.
Welcome to the Islands of Progress...and Power...
The world of Akram was consumed in world war, the mighty and xenophobic Kvasyr Empire igniting conflict with the assassination of an allied baron by Olkor nationalists, creating a domino effect that set off a powder keg of old animosities. The western continent of Uroka transformed into a terrible battlefield, a lost generation born as millions of young troopers were killed in horrific ways, war pushing industry into new darkness. In the east, the premier of the Aardic States held off, not wanting to be consumed by a “Urokan problem”. But soon, the people of the A.S. pushed back, and eventually, the First Aardic Peoples Army swept in to assist and end the war…but many thought it was too little, too late. A decade of prosperity boomed after the end of the Urokan War, with the factories constructed for the war effort now pumping out cars, electronics, textiles, and literature. Art flourished, and hedonism leeched across the upper class. Nowhere was this more apparent than in the A.S.’s gem of the Northwest, New Ry’laeh City. Founded thousands of years prior by an old Church of Sasquatch minister Corbin Ry’laeh, the City of Pleasure glowed every night, visible from the mainland along the long Corbin Memorial Bridge. Over time, NRC began to be estranged from its home state of Miskant, and established itself as an independent body. In 1925 AY, the city-state of New Ry’laeh City opened its doors to new migrants.
