When new of the Fayre of Dreams coming to Hartchester first arrived the people were overjoyed. The townsfolk had more reasons to despair than most, since their Lord – the Norman Earl, Granchamp of Durham – had abandoned Hartchester to Norse raiders some time after the Extinguishing. Soon after this a blight overtook Hartchester which drove away the raiders but decimated the population. It took a long time to rebuild, and none were more surprised to hear that the Fayre of Dreams wished to make an appearance in the downtrodden Hartchester than Mayor Fortescue. Fortescue, along with a few loyal followers, had been the beating heart of the town, keeping it afloat during the times of strife. He knew that the Fayre coming to town meant an influx of money and a time of merriment for one and all. What Mayor Fortescue could not have predicted, however, was the true motive of the Fayre of Dreams, and what they could possibly desire from the people of Hartchester.
