A sequel to the hybrid rhythm/real-time strategy game Patapon, Patapon 2 adds three new units, new minigames, a new multiplayer mode, and a new system for unlocking new classes of units. The game also adds "Heropons", a special unit that can adopt the characteristics of any other type of unit.
The story of Patapon 2 continues from where the first left off.
As a highly anticipated PSP-exclusive sequel, Patapon 2 was initially released as download-only in the North American market to encourage the use of the Playstation Network. Unlike most download-only games, a game box, manual, and voucher could be purchased in stores, presumably to keep the game's visibility high. The game was available as a download and on UMD in all other markets. A UMD version was eventually released in North America some time after the initial release.
