As a phoenix you shoot various enemies (eyeballs, death) to advance on the map from encounter to encounter. While you fire constantly, enemy attacks burn one colour and then another as they become active. The game is challenging, for while the enemy takes many many hits to destroy, you can be destroyed with one touch of an enemy attack.
