This short document outlines an alternative alignment system for 5e D&D.
In short, the system replaces the basic alignment outlined in the SRD with a spider graph of behavioral tendencies. Ideally, this system removes a lot of ambiguity of alignment by making alignmnent morally and civically agnostic. This might sound entirely antithetical to the nature of alignment as you know it, but it fits with the more nuanced trend of gameplay. Traditional simplified alignment can even be used in tandem with this system, particularly for monsters, as this system is aimed more towards tracking and guiding decisions important to player characters.
