Return to the Keep on the Borderlands is a 5th Edition (5e) Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) introductory adventure module designed for 4-8 player characters (PCs) initially of experience levels 1-3 (about 8-12 total levels).
The Borderlands is a chaotic, temperate wilderness where lawful beings have established strongholds of order to tame the lands for expansion. The keep has been established as a foothold in this dangerous area.
Adventuring groups from the realm have boldly stepped into the gap between civilization and chaos. Some seeking fame and wealth, and others quest and companionship.
The Castellan (steward) of the keep is Sir Galen the White, a paladin of noble lineage and reputation. He has sent out heralds into the cities of the realm to recruit adventurers to help tame the Borderlands.
Unknown to Sir Galen, a dark priest, Malvegil, seeks to overwhelm and then inhabit the keep. He is whittling away at the keep’s forces using guerilla warfare tactics until a massive attack of monsters can be mustered from the Caves of Chaos. Currently he is ambushing groups of merchants, soldiers, and adventurers in the wilderness, and using assassinations within the keep, executing his evil plans.
This is a fresh, refurbished, and challenging redesign of the original classic B2 Keep on the Borderlands into 5th edition rules. It is complete with boxed text for each area, adventure hooks for parties of different alignment, and a potential lead-in to the Curse of Strahd. Special rules, magic items, and monster/NPC stats, etc. are linked to D&D Beyond resources.
Maps of the keep, the wilderness, and the caves of chaos are included as JPG photo attachments. Permission is granted for copying or reproducing these map images.
