From the introduction:

At the appointed time, Kimlar, Lithara, and Ishtok arrive at the specified location within an obscure portion of the dwarven caverns. A few moments later, three familiar elves approach: Elira, Algareth, and Lagreth. One year ago, you six traveled together to retrieve a bud from the fabled Crystal Flower to consecrate a union between your two disparate peoples, a union now on the verge of dissolution. Leading them are Borodon, son of the dwarven Chieftain, and T’Ellil the Elven Wizard.
