From the Introduction

'The Lie'
In ages past, there was a war, fought not just with armies, but weapons far more destructive - high magic. This epic battle shattered the world, and we see its remnants in the skies above. But one of the High Magi stood apart, recognizing what his brethren were doing to the world. He sheltered those held in bondage- the common people. We know him only as the Divinator. He foresaw the day that the Magi in their hubris would deplete the magic and destroy the world, and prepared this place in its core to succor us. We praise his name, and the peace that he brings our world.

'The Truth'
This is the catechism that every child learns in the church of the Divinator. You know it is a lie. Something in your life exposed you to the truth. Monsters still walk the world, let by a being only referred to as the Nemesis. Though his agents are subtle in their operations, but they bring fear and despair to the world. The Church tries to hold on to the Lie. The Regents are in on it, and cling to power with draconian rules and despotism to help the Church keep order. But within the Church there is the Order of the Warded Eye- those that have been exposed to the power of the Nemesis and fight it's machinations wherever they are found. It is a hard life, as there is no overt help, as the Order works against the Church's truths. But this rag tag group of clergy and lay people of all stripes works to thwart the Nemesis, once and for all.

'The Deeper Truth'
The Divinator saved the world not out out altruism, but out of a realization that a destroyed world would yield nothing. He preserved some part of the former way of life in the cities preserved on the terrain that orbits his larder. Here, the world is divided into castes that live in spires that extend above and below the crust of the remaining land mass. Though no high Magi exist to challenge his rule, those that he did preserve help to maintain it- the lower castes working the great engines that feed off the alternating worship and terror in the world below, powering the city, and bringing power to the decaying host of the Divinator. He exists in a half-state in the tides of time, sending agents to possess people before their moment of death to pull them back from that brink. He sends missions to these agents to provide entertainment to the decadent masses even as he plays with the lives of those below to keep them on that razor edge that provides him with the most power.
