It is late in the 19th century. Slowly but surely Americans have been expanding westward across the continent. Spurred on by promises of fortune, freedom and territory Americans from all walks of life set out for the untamed lands west of the Mississippi River. This rapid expansion brings with it camps, towns and cities, some popping up overnight and disappearing just as quickly. Vast railway networks are built to connect the ever-expanding country. The vast swathes of land prove difficult to control; attracting criminals, runaways and renegade Indians. The expansion westward is accompanied by law and disorder as state and federal lawmen take up the badge to hunt down criminals.
Crime and murder rates are high. Amidst this lawlessness the states earn their nickname: "The Wild West." Justice is meted out with sixgun, shotgun, and hangin’ rope. In the turmoil some lawmen turn outlaw, and some outlaws turn lawmen. Loyalty to anything or anyone is fleeting and life is cheap. Some outlaws and lawmen become legendary heroes and villains in United States folklore.
