Before Silent Hill: Origins was made, Team Silent was tasked with working on a fifth installment in the Silent Hill series - not Homecoming, and development started as early as Silent Hill 3. The planned story of Silent Hill 5 was to focus on a damaged human being summoned to Silent Hill for a certain reason. Akira Yamaoka described the story as "the darkest story we have come up with". Another unique feature of the game was to be the fact that it started off in Silent Hill as an everyday town with people going about their lives, which would slowly begin to rot away as players progress in the game.
The game was delayed due to demand from fans wanting to get proper closure for the first game. It was cancelled by Konami who were not impressed with the game.
