Description

Rules for DMs to create Soul Bound magic items.
4 pregenerated Soul Bound magic items.

Sure, you’re a nice DM. You want to give your players cool and exciting magic items that grow in power as they do. Yet, at the same time, it doesn't do to make things too easy for your players does it?

Someone, somewhere, has to have made all the magic items that turn up during the game and therefore players are at some point going to want to know more about how this was achieved. They might want to uncover the formula so they can produce more magic items, or so they know how to safely destroy the one they have found. Either way the more a DM knows the easier it’s going to be to provide an appropriate level of detail in answer to your players incessant questioning.

DMs with the time can create their own underlying theories of magic, and then work out how to use them to build magic items that make sense so they don’t just have to rely on the standard 5e response that magic “just works”.

Or you could just use the soul bound items rules to design a whole range of multipowered items tailor made to your campaign, or just drop the 4 pregenerated items below straight into your games.

Soul bound items are designed to be a type of high risk, high reward magic object with which to equip your party. Using them allows a DM to quickly consider the legend lore that may surround the item’s creation and create a series of items more interesting than just a +1 sword. Each soul bound item has been created through a combination of mundane crafting and spell casting meaning it’s cost to produce could be accurately calculated if necessary.

In each case a soul bound item is built around the game statistics of one, non-legendary, creature with spell-like features and a Wisdom Modifier of at least +1. That gives DMs plenty of options to pick from when they want to build more of these delightfully dangerous things.
